2007 Dr.Andrew P.“Sam” Haywood Award

Sarah Elaine Fruendt               8th Grade                   Mint Hill Middle

Sarah is an energetic, enthusiastic and upbeat young lady that is very involved in her school and community. For the past four years Sarah’s cancer has been in remission and during these four years she has spent countless hours helping raise funds for the American Cancer Society. Sarah spoke to the students at Weddington Elementary School about her cancer and motivated the students to raise $5,000.00 to help with cancer research so other children might not have to go through what she has suffered. Sarah is an outstanding role model for young people because she shows great strength of character in the face of adversity.

Do The Right Thing, Inc. is a non-profit corporation dedicated to recognizing and rewarding youth excelling in a worthwhile endeavor. Together with our community sponsors, we hope to achieve the highest level of excellence for youth in our community by reaching common goals set forth herein our mission statement.

We want to reinforce socially desirable behavior among our youth.

We want to demonstrate that "good kids" are newsworthy kids.

We will strive to foster positive relationships between police officers, firefighters, and the young people of Mecklenburg county.

We will work to enhance community relations between fire and police departments, schools and local businesses.

In response to the rising school dropout rates and the high incidence of drug abuse, violence, and related crimes among the youth of our community, the Charlotte Fire Department and the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department have formed a partnership with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools to sponsor the Do the Right Thing program.

Four times a year, children from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area, on the basis of their exemplary behavior and attitude, are nominated by firefighters, police officers, teachers, and the public. Each quarter, ten nominees are chosen to receive a Do the Right Thing award. In order to reach as many children as possible, all nominees receive a Certificate of Recognition, a Do the Right Thing t-shirt, and a bumper sticker. The ten winners also receive a plaque, an incentive prize package, and an invitation to a special ceremony. The winners are also recognized on our website, CMS Cable Channel 21, and recognition is sent to The Charlotte Observer and area media outlets.
